IV. My General Philosophies on League Design and Commishing

In my opinion, there are several attributes that the best fantasy football leagues have in common:

  • They have an active group of owners that communicate frequently and build lasting rivalries;
    • They have very little, if any, turnover in owner membership each year;
    • The league rules and set-up encourage and promote owner participation, which will hopefully carry over more easily from year to year; and
    • They use a league hosting site that fits the league regarding rules, scoring, transactions, and user interface;

  • They have rules that require significant strategy in determining the better teams;

    • They promote quick paths to roster improvement, with greater advantages provided to the worse teams;
    • The rules promote continued team activity even late in the year, or even postseason, by teams who have no shot at making the championship; and
    • These rules challenge team owners, forcing difficult decisions regarding who to start, who to cut or trade, and who to acquire.
